A SHIMMERY GLITZ EXTRAVAGANZA! HERE ARE 25 STUNNING METALLIC PAINTED FURNITURE IDEAS TO SPARK YOUR CREATIVITY ALONG WITH 10 EASY TIPS TO GET THIS GLAM FINISH!
Do you love the shimmer of gold, bronze, silver, zinc, and copper as much as I do?
As much as I LOVE metallics, I don't get to paint many. Unfortunately, they are not big sellers around here. The few pieces I have painted sat around for months before I had a buyer and even then, I reduced the price and barely made a profit. I don't know if it's because us Canadians are more conservative than our friends south of the border – I mean let's face it – you Texans have the glitz market cornered and these metallics down to a fine art!!! – or if it's because there's a smaller niche for shimmery furniture?… not sure…but it's a super hot look and worth giving another try.
In the meantime, I've rounded up some of my favorites for you!
A BIG thank you to all the super talented contributors for today's post. There is SO much talent and creativity here and many of these posts lead to some excellent tutorials on metallic paint for furniture . 10 Metallic Painting Tips To Achieve These Glam Looks::
1. Clean and prep. Always an important step to a professionally finished project.
2. When using a light metallic paint (such as a champagne or rose gold) it often helps to paint first a base coat (or two) of a similar color in a regular type of paint. Many light metallic paints are somewhat translucent. Using a base coat will save you a ton of time and paint.
3. To get an upscale finish, layer different colors of metallic paints. Using a dry brush technique and building up the different colors creates a beautiful sophisticated depth.
4. Metallic paints reflect light more than regular paints do. Paint in one direction…NOT BACK AND FORTH. You want the light to reflect all in one direction. Metallic paint has mica pigments, so painting your piece all in one direction lays the pigment down so the light reflects in a unified direction. Painting in a back and forth motion will cause streaks to appear.
5. Metallic paint can often feel grainy. The grainy texture actually gives the paint it's shine. It DOES NOT mean the paint isn't mixed well or there's a problem with it. It's again because of the mica pigments.
6. Mixing metallic paint and a teaspoon or two of clear glaze can help you apply it more easily and smoothly. It lengthens the dry time so you have more time to blend and perfect your piece.
7. Dark wax can be added over metallic paint to tone down the color for a more subtle look or to add depth.
8. Use a good quality synthetic paintbrush, such as from Purdy, Wooster, Dixie Belle or Zibra. A roller IS NOT the best way to apply metallic paints to furniture.
9. On smaller pieces of furniture, there are many good metallic spray paints. Look at brands such as Tremclad, Rust-Oleum, Krylon, or Painter's Touch.
10. Have fun.! Metallic paints are a bold way to transform your furniture. The results are glamorous and sophisticated!

I know metallics are looked upon as a 'trend' but I prefer to see them as A CLASSIC. They've been around for centuries in one way or another. In fashion, home decor, makeup, and accessories, these shimmery looks are glitzy and elegant… and they make quite a statement on furniture and home decor!
As I mentioned, although I haven't been painting full-on metallic makeovers, I love using them for hardware, highlighting and details… couldn't live without them!
